Poli Beat Story: Broun Will Run!

Rep. Paul Broun will announce his intention to run for the seat that Sen. Chambliss is vacating at a news conference tomorrow afternoon. Broun’s wife first leaked word  to the Washington Post a week ago. According to the editor of an Athens publication speaking on background, Blake Aued, political reporter for Flagpole, has expressed his excitement about this.

Broun’s Senate bid will mean national coverage of an Athens political figure. Broun has already received widespread attention for his colorful manner of speaking. At a banquet in Hartwell, Ga. in September Broun said, “Evolution is a lie straight from the pit of hell.” This comment received a lot of scrutiny, including from The Daily Show host Jon Stewart.

Political journalists like Aued anticipate national interest in this race, even though it is only in its first throes.

March 24:

What happened/what is the writer discussing?
The writer is discussing Rep. Paul Broun’s decision to step down from his seat in the House of Representatives and throw his hat into the ring for Sen. Chambliss’ soon-to-be available spot in the other, most prestigious chamber.

Why is it important or interesting?
Rep. Broun has made headlines nationwide for his controversial statements on evolution.

Who is the audience? Who ought to read this story?
Anyone interested in elections, the influence of pos-2010 conservatism on the modern GOP, or Georgia politics.

Is there a local Athens angle that ought to be explored or a link to a local story you could include?
Athens residents who are Rep. Broun’s constituents, including both supporters and those who protested in reelection, would be interested in this story. I think Rep. Broun’s lack of hometown support will likely hurt his bid, and we’ll see that as the race heats up. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2012/11/09/charles-darwin-earns-nearly-4000-write-in-votes-against-ga-rep-broun/

  1. It is worth noting the ABH did not pick up this story even though the press release was sent this morning. Although maybe they are waiting for the official announcement.
