Rep. Paul Broun will announce his intention to run for the seat that Sen. Chambliss is vacating at a news conference tomorrow afternoon. Broun’s wife first leaked word to the Washington Post a week ago. According to the editor of an Athens publication speaking on background, Blake Aued, political reporter for Flagpole, has expressed his excitement about this.
Broun’s Senate bid will mean national coverage of an Athens political figure. Broun has already received widespread attention for his colorful manner of speaking. At a banquet in Hartwell, Ga. in September Broun said, “Evolution is a lie straight from the pit of hell.” This comment received a lot of scrutiny, including from The Daily Show host Jon Stewart.
